A transmission flush replaces almost all of the old transmission fluid using a machine, while a transmission service (drain-and-fill) drains the pan, usually replaces the filter and gasket, and refills with fresh fluid. Which one your car needs depends on the manufacturer’s recommendation, the type of transmission and the condition of the fluid. Northwest Express Auto Care in Katy, TX checks all three before recommending either.

Flush vs. service at a glance

Transmission flush (fluid exchange) Transmission service (drain-and-fill)
How it works A machine exchanges the old fluid for new while the engine runs The pan is drained, the filter and gasket are usually replaced, and new fluid is added
How much fluid is replaced Nearly all of it Part of it (fluid in the torque converter and lines stays)
Filter replaced? Not usually Usually, on transmissions with a serviceable filter
Best for Regular maintenance on transmissions whose maker allows a fluid exchange Vehicles with a serviceable filter, or where the manufacturer specifies a drain-and-fill

How often does transmission fluid need to be changed?

Follow your owner’s manual. Many automatic transmissions call for fluid service somewhere between 30,000 and 60,000 miles under severe conditions, and some newer “lifetime fluid” transmissions still benefit from service at higher mileage. Katy driving often counts as severe: summer heat, stop-and-go traffic on I-10 and the Grand Parkway, and towing all break fluid down faster.

Is a transmission flush bad for an older transmission?

It can be risky on a high-mileage transmission whose fluid has never been changed, because a sudden full exchange can disturb worn internal parts. In that case a drain-and-fill, sometimes repeated a few times, is often the safer choice. That’s why we look at the fluid’s color and smell and the vehicle’s service history first.

What about CVTs and dual-clutch transmissions?

Continuously variable transmissions (CVTs) and dual-clutch transmissions need their own specific fluids and procedures. Using the wrong fluid can cause damage, so we always use the fluid your manufacturer specifies.

Signs your transmission fluid needs attention

  • Fluid that looks dark brown or black instead of red, or smells burnt
  • Slipping, delayed engagement or harsh shifts
  • Shuddering at steady speeds
  • A leak under the middle of the vehicle

Any of these can also point to a bigger problem, so start with a diagnosis. See our guide to 7 transmission warning signs, our transmission service page, and what transmission repair or replacement costs.
