The most common transmission warning signs are slipping gears, delayed or harsh shifts, unusual noises, fluid leaks, a burning smell, a lit check-engine or transmission light, and a shuddering feeling while driving. Catching them early is the best way to keep a repair small. Here is what each sign can mean.

1. Slipping gears

The engine revs up but the vehicle does not accelerate the way it should, or it feels like it pops out of gear. Slipping can come from low or burnt fluid, a failing solenoid, or worn internal clutches.

2. Delayed engagement or harsh shifting

A pause before the vehicle moves after shifting into Drive or Reverse, or hard clunks between gears. Fluid level and condition, solenoids and software are common causes.

3. Whining, humming or clunking noises

Noises that change with speed or gear can point to internal wear, a torque converter problem, or low fluid. Clunks can also come from worn transmission or engine mounts.

4. Red or brown fluid under the vehicle

Automatic transmission fluid is usually red when new and darkens with age. Spots under the middle or front of the vehicle can mean a leaking pan gasket, seal or cooler line. Low fluid is one of the fastest ways to damage a transmission.

5. A burning smell

Overheated transmission fluid has a sharp, burnt odor. Heat breaks down fluid, and Katy summers, towing and stop-and-go traffic on I-10 and the Grand Parkway all add heat.

6. Check-engine or transmission warning light

Modern transmissions are computer-controlled and store fault codes when something is wrong. A scan tool reads those codes, which is the first step in a proper diagnosis.

7. Shuddering or vibration

A shudder at steady speeds, often around 30 to 50 mph, can be related to the torque converter or the transmission fluid. On CVT-equipped vehicles, shudder or a droning feel are also common complaints.

What should I do if I notice these signs?

  • Check the transmission fluid if your vehicle has a dipstick, or have a shop check it.
  • Avoid towing or hard acceleration until it is inspected.
  • Do not ignore a flashing warning light; get the codes read.
  • Get a diagnosis before agreeing to a replacement. Some problems are fixed with a repair, a fluid service or a software update.
